IN the field of sports at least, Darlene 'Lelen' Berberabe has willingly taken the backseat, first to her late husband Avelino 'Samboy' Lim, and later to their only child, Jamie.
But in the legal profession, Lelen is a big shot.
Berberabe, a University of the Philippine graduate, served as the CEO of Pag-Ibig Fund from 2010 to 2017, was the dean of the UP College of Law from 2023 to 2025 and now serves as the 39th solicitor general of the Philippines.

Berberabe has been in the news for days over the OSG's 74-page comment asking the Supreme Court to junk Sen. Bato Dela Rosa's petition to stop the government from enforcing an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court.
Excerpts of the OSG position, like this one below, were well-applauded online.
“The law was never intended to provide an excuse for evasion, nor to become a weapon wielded only by those with power. It exists so that even the voiceless dead, whose cries never reached a courtroom, are not forgotten by justice. No amount of technical reasoning can disguise the absence of justice. Our conscience will know. The nation will know. History will know,” the OSG wrote.

Berberabe was the proud and ever-supportive mom who stayed in the background while Jamie reached for her dreams, becoming a two-time karate gold medalist in the Southeast Asian Games and later a summa cum laude at UP.
Now it's Jamie's turn to give her mom a shoutout.
“THIS POWERFUL LADY IS MY MOM!!!” the 29-year old Jamie, now a courtside reporter for TV5's coverage of the PBA games, wrote.
