GILAS Pilipinas fell just short of a breakthrough win, absorbing a heartbreaking 106-102 double-overtime loss to New Zealand in the Fiba Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers on Friday in Auckland.

Juan Gomez de Liano and Kevin Quiambao scored 23 points each, while Dwight Ramos and Carl Tamayo also delivered as Gilas twice forced overtime and even grabbed a late four-point lead before the Tall Blacks rallied to escape.
The loss left Filipino fans with mixed emotions, including regret over a golden opportunity that slipped away, but also pride after Gilas pushed one of Asia-Oceania's top teams to the brink in one of its grittiest performances in recent memory.
