"Galingan niyo, nakasuporta na ako sa inyo! Andito na ako para sa inyo, Ginebra."
This was the earnest message of Sanya Lopez to diehard fans of Barangay Ginebra. She was revealed today as the GSM's new "island girl" — the latest in a long line of Ginebra San Miguel calendar girls that began with model Monina Tan back in 1988.
When she found out that she'd be taking on the job (Pia Wurtzbach was last year's face for the popular GSM calendars), Lopez was nervous. "Mismong ako, hindi ako makapaniwala," she related during her press conference reveal. "Iba kasi pag si Pia Wurtzbach ang nauna, diba?"
She prepared hard for the photoshoot — or as she put it, "Nag-extra effort talaga ako para sa Ginebra." She worked out almost every day, and restricted herself to a diet of just fish and chicken.
The results clearly paid off; expect to see the four variants of her calendar to go up on many, many neighborhood walls very soon. But Lopez wants her stint as an island girl to be remembered for more than just a pretty face. "Gusto kong makita [ang isang calendar girl] as isang babaeng matapang, isang babaeng palaban."
