RUBEN Gonzales lost in the men's doubles final of the 30th Southeast Asian Games, but is a winner in love.
The veteran tennis player proposed to his longtime girlfriend, former race car driver Michelle Bumgarner, on Saturday just moments after the men's doubles final at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
The Filipino popped the question after he and partner Treat Huey settled for the silver medal in men's doubles, where they lost to compatriots Francis Casey Alcantara and Jeson Patrombon.
Gonzales, 34, said he wanted the moment to be unexpected, which is why he did it during the SEA Games.
He and Bumgarner, 30, have been a couple for five-and-a-half years.
“I’ve been planning to do it for a while. I know my family is going to be here. I wanted it to be special. I knew she will be surprised,” said Gonzales in an interview by Peter Paul Patrick Lucas of Radyo Pilipinas Dos.
Bumgarner, who cheered for her boyfriend from the stands, didn't see it coming.
“I had no idea,” said the 30-year-old Bumgarner.
The couple said they will soon discuss the wedding date and other details.
