‘Yung mga basura, sobrang dami. Nakakadurog ng puso.’ This was what brothers Edrian, Elmar, Eries, and Art Santos, aka the “Quatro Santos,” told SPIN.ph when asked about their viral videos.

Quatro Santos is a group of brothers who became content creators through videos that show their massive cleanup projects undertaken in different branangys. The Quatro Santos brothers clean up creeks, canals, and vacant lots with their bare hands. The time-lapsed videos are quite satisfying to watch, which is why they have gone viral.

But what’s remarkable is how these cleanup projects are undertaken by just the four brothers with their boots and bare hands—and all in a day’s work. With no heavy equipment, the brothers power through mud and trash that had been stuck in creeks, canals, and vacant lots for years that no one had ever bothered to clean up.

In an exclusive interview with SPIN.ph, the Quatro Santos tell their story of picking garbage.

How Quatro Santos started

The Quatro Santos started with a very simple task: cleaning their own house. After all, you can't clean other barangays if your own house is a mess.

The brothers never expected their two videos of cleaning their house and their backyard would go viral. They enjoyed what they did, so they decided to look for more places to clean up.

Their most popular video on Facebook has over 20,000 shares and nearly 500,000 reactions and garnered 6.2 million views as of this writing. It shows how the brothers undertook a massive cleanup of a clogged creek and its tributary canals.

Plastic waste is the leading pollutant in the world's oceans, and much of this comes from the Philippines. The country has yet to implement a total ban on single-use plastics, which often find their way into creeks and rivers, and then get washed away into the ocean where they kill millions of marine animals.

But before they get washed into the ocean, they get clogged first into creeks and canals seen in Quatro Santos's videos.

Under the law, it is the barangay government that is responsible for waste management in its territory. This includes maintaining the cleanliness of public spaces, creeks, and canals. Republic Act 7160 or the Local Government Code of 1991 empowered barangays in the enforcement of laws on cleanliness and sanitation, and implementation of solid waste management programs. Sadly, many barangays neglect this duty.

“Ang hindi namin malilimutan ay every time na lulusong kami sa katubigan—sapa man o ilog at estero—ay yung mga basura na sobrang dami. Halos nkakadurog ng puso,” the brothers said.

But the brothers hope their videos inspire and educate Filipinos on their impact on the environment.
