PROOF they’re doing their share in controlling the spread of COVID-19 in the country, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Officer In-Charge Ramon Fernandez and several prominent members of the national team underwent swab testing on Thursday at the PhilSports Complex in Pasig.

Fresh from Cebu, Fernandez had the procedure right on his first day of office as OIC of the government sports agency as PSC chairman William ‘Butch’ Ramirez is currently on leave.

The 66-year-old basketball great and PSC commissioner was accompanied by his wife Karla Kintanar-Fernandez. He’s expected to complete the 14-day quarantine while doing function as PSC OIC until July 17.

Also going through swab testing procedure were Olympic-bound Irish Magno, AIBA World Championship gold medalist Nesthy Petecio along with athletes from fencing and para-athletes from athletics, wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, table tennis, and chess, all of who are residing in PhilSports.

“We will comply with the standard procedure to ensure that we are helping in curbing the spread of the virus,” said Fernandez.

Ten more boxers, six male and four female, along with a coach also did swab testing.

The testing meant delaying the departure of Magno and Petecio to their respective provinces after spending the last three months locked down at the ABAP headquarters in Baguio City.

They will be on a 14-day quarantine and are under observation until the test results are out.

“Hindi muna sila pinalalabas ng assigned rooms nila. Until lumabas ang swab test results nila, hinahatiran sila ng pagkain,” said PhilSports dormitory manager Roselle Destura.

“Kung may ipapabili, ipapawithdraw, at ipapadala sa pamilya, pinapaiwan namin sila ng note sa harap ng room nila and then kami na gagawa for them,” she added.

The PSC will also assist the athletes in securing their travel passes going back to their hometowns once testing results had been known and flights become available.
