STA. Lucia came out swinging in the Philippine Super Liga Invitational Conference and defeated Foton, 13-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-19, with a hopeful Pam Lastimosa leading the way.
Both the previous Grand Prix and All-Filipino conferences have been tough for the Lady Realtors, who won their first games only to finish the elimination round with similar 2-12 win-loss records.
On Tuesday at Bacoor Strike Gym in Cavite, Lastimosa, who turned 26 the day before, told SPIN Life that all the team needs to do is put the past behind and start anew to get over the hump.
"Oo naman [eager kami manalo], kasi siyempre kailangan din namin lamangan 'yung standing namin last conference," said the birthday girl, who had a game-high 19 points. "Isa 'yun sa motivation namin na we have to work hard and win as much as we can every game. It was a very good start for the conference and momentum builder din for the upcoming games."
Lastimosa admitted that rebounding from two 2-12 standings wasn't easy.
Sta. Lucia had to go back to the gym the day after a defeat and prepare for the next one, which they would eventually lose. She revealed, "It's more of mental kasi low morale ka kapag talo, so 'yun 'yung kailangan namin i-mindset para kumpyansa kami."
Unlike their past games, though, the former University of Santo Tomas team captain felt that they were more vocal, not to mention more aware, of each other's strengths and weaknesses this time around.
"I think we were there for each other, nag-uusap kami na, 'Kaya namin 'to,'" Lastimosa shared. "'Yung kumpiyansa sa game and 'yung maturity na kumapit nandoon kahit na 'yung score medyo dikit."
