SUBIC, Zambales – Duathlon gold medalist Monica Torres of the Philippines offered a helping hand to silver medalist Thailand’s Pareeya Sonsem, who stumbled to the ground after crossing the finish line in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games race on Monday.
Torres recorded 2:08:44 while Sonsem followed after about three minutes, posting a time of 2:11:18 to settle for silver. Vietnam’s Thi Phuong Trunh Nguyen clinched bronze with 2:14:20.
“Sabi nga natin, ‘We win as one’,” she said. “Malaking karangalan na mag-represent ng bansa, and the best thing about it is having the opportunity na ipakita sa mundo na maraming talented na Filipinos pati yung quality natin na pagiging matiisin tsaka matapang.”
With that simple gesture, the 35-year-old duathlon queen showed sportsmanship and a dose of good old Pinoy hospitality — even while finishing with a clean first place victory.
“Good news na nakadagdag ako sa gold medal tally natin. Matagal na po akong naglalaro, but first time ko po sa SEA Games, and it’s a different kind of feeling for me, kasi today it is, I represent the Philippines,” she shared.
