WHEN he returned home for a vacation after a grueling season on Thursday, EJ Obiena had by his side Caroline Joyeux, his girlfriend for almost two years.

The 21-year-old Joyeux is in town to be with Obiena and the trip comes at a perfect time. The German native is also an athlete, with the triple jump as her pet event, and is on the break as well just like his boyfriend.

“This is my first time in Asia. Before, I was only in Europe, not really outside to see the world. It’s really nice,” said Joyeux. "I really want to enjoy it here. Looking forward to the next days."

Caroline Joyeux, a German athlete who considers the triple jump as her pet event, has been in a relationship with EJ Obiena for two years now.

Like his boyfriend, the triple jumper has also been performing well as of late, winning three straight times in Germany to cap off the year.

She occasionally competes in other events such as the 100-meter dash and the long jump, the event where she placed sixth in ISTAF 2022, the competition where Obiena placed second just a few days ago.

Joyeux looks forward to spending time with the 26-year-old Obiena not only because it is the offseason, but also because they are mostly in a long-distance relationship due to the demands of their respective careers.

Joyeux is based in Berlin where she also studies, while Obiena trains in Italy.

Joyeux met Obiena in October of 2020 when she had a training camp in Fornia, Italy where the Filipino pole vaulter is based.

“I had a training camp with my club. We just met in Fornia,” said Joyeux.

Since they became a couple, their conversations have mostly been through the phone or online, and the only time they get to meet in person is if Obiena is in Germany for a competition.

Joyeux was also not around during Obiena’s milestones including the time when he won a bronze medal in the World Athletics Championship in Eugene, Oregon last July as she was competing in the Nationals for athletes aged 23 below in Germany.

But Joyeux said being an athlete herself has helped in their long-distance relationship.

“It’s really good to balance. We understand each other. We have the same schedule sometimes. We sacrifice the same thing for our career for being an athlete. It’s good,” she said.

Joyeux said they make sure that they still spend some quality time together even though they are far away with each other.

“In our free time, mostly in the evening, we just talk,” said Joyeux. “He is very good as a boyfriend. He is like a brother, friend, boyfriend together. He is all together. He is perfect.”

“It’s like it’s a whole track family. I never had that before. It’s cool because everyone knows what he is doing and understand it," she said. "My parents sometimes don’t know. When I jump sometimes, they were like, ‘You are so good” and I say ‘Yeah, it’s good.’

Joyeux said she plans to watch Obiena’s competitions more often in the future as he progresses in his career.

“I would love to do it more often, to be honest. But I have my own career as an athlete so when he is competing, I compete too and train. When it’s possible, of course, I would come. I hope in the future, I would go to more competitions,” said Joyeux.

“Hopefully, Olympics and World Championships,” she added.
