CALL him names like ‘Kangkong” or “Gatorade Lord” all you want, but Ginebra star Mark Caguioa has mastered the art of tuning out the junk over the years.
“I don’t think about it, ang tagal ko na dito para maapektuhan. There’s no way para [maapektuhan ako],” Caguioa told SPIN Life during the launch of the 2019 Never Say Die jersey collection on Thursday at Novotel.
In fact, the former PBA MVP just takes the taunting in stride.
“I love it, I love it,” the 18-year PBA veteran said, adding that he understands that win or lose, they can never please everybody. “It [bashing] comes with the territory. You know, part ‘yan ng pagiging basketball player mo, there’s always gonna be bashers but you don’t fight back because it’s all fun and games.”
He added: “Maski kahit saan ‘yan, kahit saan ka magtrabaho meron kang makakaaway, meron mga bumubulung-bulong sa’yo na ganito, ganyan. You cannot please everybody and in this type of business you got to learn how to overcome those.”
Caguioa, who will turn 40 in November, explained that he'd rather let go of all the negativity than dwell on it.
“Kapag inisip mo ‘yung mga sinasabi ng mga tao, kapag dinamdam mo ‘yung mga sinasabi ng mga tao, talo ka dahil ang dami niyan,” he said.
But he still chooses to see the good in people despite the derogatory nicknames and remarks hurled at him and his team.
“Mababait naman ‘yung mga taong ‘yun, alam mo naman ang mga Pilipino palabiro," Caguioa said. "May mga pangit na [nasasabi] but you don’t take it to heart, ganyan talaga. Mas madami ang nagmamahal kesa sa mga bashers.”
