SOCIAL media is not for the weak or thin-skinned.
In this day and age where people’s opinion can make or break one’s career, celebrities and athletes, no matter how good they are at what they do, must either be open to criticisms or be as dedma as possible.
But for long-time pals and former Ginebra backcourt tandem Mark Caguioa and Jayjay Helterbrand, not caring too much is the key.
During one of their games at the MOA Arena, SPIN.ph caught up with Caguioa and Helterbrand, and the two shared that they simply don't care when haters call them names such as “kangkong” and “Bora Cup."
“Minsan nga, yung mga memes na ginagawa nila sa akin, akala siguro nila naaasar ako. Pero wala sa akin yun eh,” said Caguioa.
“Sa akin it's more fun, it's boring if everybody’s on your side. If they call us 'kangkong' or 'Bora Cup,' okay lang. Actually, it motivates us to play harder, it's something that pushes us to do better,” said Helterbrand, who is now retired after 17 years of playing for Ginebra.
For eight long years, during the time that the Gin Kings were not winning, the “Fast and the Furious” tandem have been the favorite subjects of memes and ridicule.
So when the league’s most popular ball club finally won the 2016 Governors' Cup, Caguioa took the opportunity to hit back at all their haters.
"Kangkungin niyo mukha niyo," he laughed.
Helterbrand, on the other hand, shared that the best way to keep their haters quiet is to just keep on winning.
“The best way to shut people up is to win,” he said. “It's hard to talk trash back at them, it’s never right anyway. But when they call you 'kangkong' and send you to 'Bora Cup' and then you win, wala na silang masasabi sayo.”
