Even medical practitioners that have dedicated their whole lives to treating ilnesses believe that prevention is still the best medicine.
This is the crux of ManilaMed-Medical Center Manila's Sports and Exercise Medicine Center, whose multispecialty and multidisciplinary team aspect (orthopedics, cardiology, rehabilitation medicine) offers clients medically sound advice, consultation, and treatment to stay physically active in a healthy and safe manner.
ManilaMed recently held a press briefing on sports injury prevention with a panel of doctors from its Sports and Exercise Medicine Center and they shared how the idea of putting up this all-in-one medical hub came about.
"Initially, we have a setup wherein patients come to us, halimbawa sumakit yung tuhod, then we refer them to the appropriate wing. 'May ACL tear ka, dun ka sa ortho.' Ganun lang yung connection namin," Dr. Betty Dy-Mancao of Rehabilitation Medicine shared. "But we realized that if we see the patient beforehand in a single center, where we can conduct everything, from assessment to management — and operation, if necessary — it would be better."
Cardiologist Dr. Lucky Cuenza underscored the importance of maximizing an athlete's performance without putting them at risk of serious injury or cardiac disease through systematic evaluation. It doesn't matter if you're a pro, weekend warrior, training for the first time, or recovering from a condition, consulting with a specialist before engaging in any physical activity is always a must.
"We feel that sports and exercise play a crucial role not just even at the professional, but even the grassroots level. We want to help you exercise safely, get back in the game, and feel better, in the most optimal way," Cuenza explained. "Sports medicine in the Philippines is relatively young, which is ironic because we have a sports-loving culture. Pero puro puso tayo, dire-diretso lang, without even thinking, and we suffer the consequences afterwards."
