THOUSANDS have flocked at the Rizal Memorial ballpark but not for a baseball game.

The ballpark where baseball legends Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig once played were turned into a temporary shelter area for locally-stranded individuals (LSI) as they wait for their turn to be transported to their respective provinces.

But photos at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium, which is said to be capable of accommodating 10,000 spectators, have created a stir online, mainly because of the absence of social distancing with LSIs at the stands.

Some LSIs are also staying outside the ballpark.

Commissioner Ramon Fernandez of the Philippine Sports Commission posted photos of families starting to be transported to their homes through the help of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine National Police, Coast Guard, and Assistant Secretary Joy Encabo, the lead convenor of the Hatid Tulong program of the government.
