MUSIC is the language of the soul and for United VC team captain Kalei Mau, music is something that’s within her.

The Fil-Hawaiian volleyball player shared that growing up, her culture has taught her to embrace and love music.

“Besides volleyball, I have a really big passion for music and it comes from my culture. Hawaiian’s, we just thrive and we’re so happy with music and the sound of it,” she said. "So ever since I was a little girl, I always sing and I play the ukelele.”

Being away from family at a young age, she found solace and comfort in music.

“It’s [music] something that kept me sane while I’ve been overseas and away from home. I left Hawaii to go to the States for school when I was 17, so one way I found to make me feel my heart happy was music, and it stuck with me,” she said.

Mau started to write her own songs and also did some covers, which she posted online.

She has two songs on Spotify, Happy Sad and Dying to Be Loved (feat. Ji).

Through her songs, Mau was able to express her feelings about her experiences in life.

“[They’re both] original. The first one [Dying to Be Loved (feat. Ji)] I came up with was in 2017 summer and it was kind of, life is hard and I went through a heartbreak,” she said.

“And then this past summer in 2018, I came out with another song, it’s called Happy Sad and it was another about my relationship and this one was it’s a really good vibe, I love to dance to it,” she added.

Mau also shared that even her teammates and their coaching staff love her songs and would even play them as background music during training.

“My teammates always love to play in the locker room. Josh [Ylaya] and Vian [Serranilla] would sometimes play it in practice and everyone would go crazy for me,” she said.

“I have another song that I wrote back in middle school, it’s called One Word and you can actually find a lot of my covers and music on Youtube Kalei Mau singing music,” she added.

Although she’s busy with the ongoing season of the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix, Mau revealed that she plans to write more songs in the future.

“I would love to start making music again now that I’ve made the Philippines home. I’ve settled, I can see myself here for a really long time. I would love to start making music again,” she said.
