Part I: List of sports personalities vying in May 2019 elections

IN a little over a week, Filipinos will troop to polling centers around the country and perform our civic duties once again to elect a new set of public servants.

The world of sports isn't insulated from that, as seen from several personalities who are running for various positions in government, both local and national.

In the first installment of our three-part series, we take a look at sportsmen running for national positions.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) chairman Sonny Angara is running for a second term in the Senate.

The Aurora-born Angara was elected to one of the top positions in the national basketball association back in 2015 and was a key mover behind the Philippines winning the right to co-host the 2023 Fiba World Cup with Japan and Indonesia.

Former University of the Philippines volleybelle Pia Cayetano is also looking to return to the Upper House.

The former University of the Philippines Lady Maroon and active triathlete has made sports one of her main advocacies since her first tenure as a senator from 2004 to 2016.

National coach Yeng Guiao is looking to make a comeback in the House of Representatives as he vies against incumbent Jonjon Lazatin and Bernadette David in the first district of Pampanga.

There are also a few sports personalities who are seeking posts in the Lower House through the party list system.

NorthPort team owner Mikee Romero, together with former Kia team manager and close Manny Pacquiao associate Eric Pineda, are both looking to be re-elected with 1-PACMAN.

Meanwhile, former boxer Bobby Pacquiao is the first nominee of OFW Family Club after failing to win in the local elections in the past polls.

PBA great and Magnolia team manager Alvin Patrimonio also tries to extend his boundaries in the government as he is the third nominee for Abante Pilipinas.
