KIB Montalbo has plenty to celebrate these days.
On the same day the TNT guard won his first PBA title in only his sophomore year in the league, the Montalbo family received Kib's diploma in Manila from De La Salle University where he finished his degree in Business Management.
As the Tropang GIGA celebrated their first league title in six years in the 2021 Philippine Cup title after beating Magnolia in five games, no one was happier than Montalbo’s father Roger over an achievement he described as a “double gift.”
Roger bared his son continued to study even at the end of his UAAP stint with the Green Archers, attending online classes while inside the PBA bubble in Clark last yeat and the semi-bubble in Bacolor, Pampanga.
“No other activities after practice so aral,” said the elder Montablo, himself a former player in the Negros Basketball Association where he played against the likes of Bong Ravena, Boyet Fernandez, Mike Mustre, and Boycie Zamar.
The two-time UAAP champion was selected 11th overall by TNT in the 2019 rookie draft and proved a vital cog in TNT’s championship run, standing out in Game Five where he had seven points, three rebounds, and two steals in only 14 minutes of play.
Overall, Montalbo averaged 6.4 points in a conference highlighted by a 22-point effort against NorthPort last September 15. He also provided the intangibles on defense where he usually guarded the top backcourt offensive option of the opponent.
Roger is happy for his son's PBA accomplishment, but admitted seeing his son finish his studies made him happier.
“’Yun ang sinabi ko sa kanya. Gusto ko diploma,” said Roger. “’Yan ang personal trophy niya.”
