IF you’ve been a fan of the puppy-loving, gun-wielding, and revenge-filled Keanu Reeves since his debut film back in 2014, then you must see the latest trailer of John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum. And, if you’ve been a fan of Keanu Reeves as an actor, then you might notice some references to one of his earlier and most popular movies 20 years ago, The Matrix.
You may not know it yet, or you just haven’t absorbed it as fast as we did, but this is the Keanu Reeves-led Matrix successor we’ve all been waiting for. The entire trailer is worth watching a million times over just because of all the sick, neon-lit action alone. But if you can’t wait for the inter-movie reference, you can go ahead and skip to 1:12. Wick asks Winston, “Are services still off limits to me?” The owner of the contract-killer club, Continental Hotel, responds with a question of his own: “What do you need?” To which Wick answers, “Guns. Lots of guns.”
If you can’t remember just what part of The Matrix was that used, here’s a quick refresher.
If you continue watching after that, you’ll see (and hear) Laurence Fishburne and his underworld king character from John Wick: Chapter 2 still stans for Keanu/Neo/Wick: “You think you can take John Wick? You’ve got a nasty surprise comin’.” If that looks strangely familiar, that’s because Fishburne played Morpheus in The Matrix where he kept telling everybody that no, seriously, Neo is The One until he got superpowers IRL and everybody stopped doubting.
And we don’t have too much to wait until we see Fishburne again as the Official Reeves Believer when John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum hits theaters on May 17, 2019. In case anyone cared, that’s 9 days short of exactly two decades since the first Matrix movie came out in May 26, 1999.
