(PEP.ph) Early this June, PBA superstar James Yap, his wife Michela Cazzola, and their two children packed up and flew to Italy despite the coronavirus pandemic.

The family has since been staying in their second home in Urbino, Italy, the hometown of Michela.

James said "pressing family matters" made him and Michela risk a trip at this time.

As of latest count, there have been around 241,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Italy. Around 16,000 are currently active. It was among the hardest hit European countries when the World Health Organized first declared a global pandemic.

In a phone conversation with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) last Monday, June 29, James admitted to having initial worries about the trip.

BLESSING IN DISGUISE

The 38-year-old cager revealed to PEP.ph that in the original plan, he was not supposed to leave for Italy.

He related, "Nung umalis kami, first time kami umalis na hindi kasama yung yaya kasi hindi pinayagan, kasi walang visa.

"Sarado yung Italian embassy so hindi makakuha ng visa. Good thing may visa ako so ako yung sumama."

James took it as a blessing in disguise, a chance to be more actively involved in taking care of his children.

He said, "Iba yung... kasi sila dito, ang karamihan walang kasambahay.

So what are his usual bonding activities with his family?

Kasi yung mga park dito, malalawak, e, and wala masyadong tao.

"Yun yung bonding namin, maghabulan kami doon, maglaro kami ng basketball kasi may court din dun.

"Pumupunta kami sa lake, ganun. Puro mga nature yung bonding namin."

James also said he alone return to the country for his team activities.

He confirmed, "Babalik ako this July dahil baka mare-resume na kami sa PBA and baka mag-practice na kami sa Rain or Shine so baka July. If ever, dito muna sila. Mag-stay muna sila dito."

MEANWHILE, IN ITALY...

And how is it in another country at the moment?

James related, "Okay naman dahil yung COVID-19 cases nila dito is pababa na. Nag-o-open na yung mga restaurants and yung shops nila. Parang getting back to normal na sila."

Wearing a mask, even in the European country, is a must.
