ALTHOUGH there is no data as to the exact figures, the number of cyclists going to Tagaytay City has indeed increased.

PhilCycling president Abraham ‘Bambol’ Tolentino is glad to see for himself the increase in number of people that are taking up the sport in the new normal amidst the pandemic, and Tagaytay is just one of the places new cyclists are going to.

“Last weekend, nasa Tagaytay ako dahil binuksan na namin sa turismo,” Tolentino said recently. “Siguro, hindi ko na matapos bilangin kung ilang libong siklista ang umakyat. Ngayon lang ako nakakita ng ganun.”

Tagaytay is a haven for cyclists, newbies and veterans alike. Aside from the climb to the city, biking enthusiasts are greeted with the cool climate and the scenic spots that include the Taal Volcano when they complete their ride.

Nowadays, Tolentino noticed that there are a consistent number of cyclists that go to Tagaytay from morning to until the afternoon.

“Normally, kapag tanghali, bumababa na sila. Lagpas na ng tanghali, nandoon pa, nadadagdagan pa,” said Tolentino, a former mayor of the city.

With other sports still not allowed during the pandemic, people have turned to cycling for physical conditioning and recreational due to the fact that social distancing is inherent in the activity.

The absence of public transportation has also forced millions of people in the workforce to use their bicycles or their commute.

“Na-excite na rin ang mga tao na lumabas. Aside from motorcycles, scooters, and kotse, mas marami talaga ‘yung pulu-pulutong talaga ang nagbibisikleta. ‘Yun na ang new normal going to work at going to kung saan man,” said Tolentino.

The PhilCycling chief urged cyclists to practice safety protocols to avoid accidents at the time where the government is just starting to build infrastructure such as bike lanes for them.

“Basta mag-ingat lang magbisikleta. Hindi pa lahat ng bike lanes ay safe. Medyo na-late na tayo sa mga bike lanes ngayon. Ngayon pa lang tayo namulat [sa bike lanes] unlike other countries na na-sustain,” said Tolentino.
