AS PART of the deal signed between the NBA and both Cignal TV and Smart Communications, Smart subscribers will also be able to watch the NBA restart for free on their mobile phones.
“According to the NBA, this is the first time that they're actually going to be integrating a livestreaming site for the NBA games in a telco load pack,” said Smart SVP and head consumer wireless business Jane Basas in the Sports Page program of Cignal TV. “So our objective really by doing this is to essentially democratize the access to premium NBA content.”
Various customer service representatives on Smart's Facebook page have been dropping info about the mechanics on their posts. We've been able to verify the information as well, but have also reached out to Smart for additional comment.
If you’ve got a Smart number, here’s how it will work, according to their FB reps. We'll update this page with full guidelines once they are released. [Update, 30 July, 8:44 p.m.: Now updated with full guidelines, according to the press release.]
You need to be a Smart Signature subscriber, or have a Smart, TNT, or Sun number with a running Gigavideo promo. Smart shall constantly update the portal to enhance the experience of customers across different mobile browsers. For more details on the compatible browsers, visit the FAQ section of NBA.Smart."
Input your Smart, TNT, or Sun number on NBA.smart. A ticket number will be sent to your mobile via a one-time PIN.
Log in to NBA.smart with your mobile number and the one-time PIN. If your log-in is successful, you will be able to watch the NBA stream on the NBA.smart.com.ph site until 12 midnight.
A ticket is only valid for one device, for one day. If you want to watch the Smart NBA stream for another day, or on another device, you’ll have to go through the process again.
You can also use your postpaid and prepaid plans to access NBA League Pass. According to the press release: "Hardcore basketball fans can also purchase the NBA League Pass using their Smart Prepaid load or charged to their Smart Postpaid bill. NBA League Pass offers unlimited access to all live NBA games in high-definition with live stats and multiple viewing options and angles, including the NBA Mobile View. It also offers access to special features and video-on-demand content."
With more and more Filipinos on their mobile phones, this will undoubtedly increase the NBA’s reach.
Still, if you prefer to watch NBA via a TV broadcast or you have a Globe number, you can catch games on TV5 and One Sports (channel 41 on free TV, channel 6 on Cignal TV), with two games shown per week. If you’ve got Cignal TV, you can also watch NBA TV Philippines on Channel 96 (for standard definition accounts) or Channel 262 (for HD accounts).
In a statement, Smart President and CEO and PLDT Chief Revenue Officer Alfredo S. Panlilio, (as well as president of Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas) said: “We share the excitement of Filipino fans for the return of the NBA games after months without live basketball. This beta portal of NBA.Smart is our big step to whet the appetite of the fans and make it simpler for them to follow all the hardcourt action in this much anticipated NBA season."
