LAST week, the reboot of Hellboy finally hit theaters quite literally. Undeniably, the hype for this movie came from David Harbour’s body transformation from the fluffy, donut-loving, Sheriff Jim Hopper of Stranger Things, to the too-jacked-for-his-own good, Hellboy. And, apparently, Harbour got carried away a little too much to give his recast/reboot the revamp it deserved.
Did you know that production on the film was almost derailed (and delayed) by Harbour’s desire to give justice to the character? Speaking to TMZ, Harbour’s personal trainer, Don Saladino, said that the actor underwent such a physical change that his demonic bodysuit almost didn’t fit.
“Those abs, those shoulders, those arms, that was not him, that was the prosthetic suit,” said Saladino.
Based on the hellish character from Dark Horse Comics, Hellboy is a giant red half-demon. And while the makeup and devilish prosthetics helped a ton in convincingly transforming David Harbour from the Stranger Things dad bod cop to a hulking red beast, his intense nine-week training schedule also helped Harbour get into character. Maybe a tad too much, though.
“We got a call from the production company, they were actually a little upset, they said he’s losing too much weight, and I said he’s not, he weighed in at 250 lbs, he’s 249 lbs today, he hasn’t lost any weight,” Saladino added. “But they said his body’s changing so much, we’re going to have to redo the suit.” Then he joked that he immediately called Harbour to tell him to have some ice cream.
Saladino has worked with the likes of Ryan Reynolds. He’s basically the guy that helps actors get blockbuster-ready. But unlike most big-screen superheroes, the goal wasn’t to make David Harbour’s Hellboy look “lean” or “like an Abercrombie model,” but the aim was to make him look “vicious.”
“I wanted to develop mainly power and strength,” Harbour said in the Instagram video, “so you believe that when [Hellboy] hits you, he hits you like a truck.”
