HBO’s superhero show Watchmen just cleaned up in the recently announced nomination list for the 72nd Emmy Awards — generally acknowledged as TV’s highest honors.
It was nominated in 26 categories, including ‘Best Limited Series’, as well as a best actress nod for Regina King, who plays Angela Abar, a secretive superhero who also goes by the name Sister Night.
Co-stars Jeremy Irons, as retired superhero Adrian Veidt, also secured a best actor nomination. Three other key players from Watchmen (Yaya Abdul-Mahteen, Louis Gosset Jr., and Jovan Adepo) stuffed the ‘Best Supporting Actor’ nomination list.
A continuation of the acclaimed comic book series — which was later turned into a 2009 film — HBO’s Watchmen is an unsettling superhero drama that tackles the generational trauma of racism head on.
Its opening scene set the tone: a dramatization of the little-known 1921 Tulsa Massacre, when citizens of the prosperous ‘Black Wall Street’ were killed by white supremacists.
Released last year to critical acclaim, Watchmen re-emerged in the conversation earlier this year following the Black Lives Matter protests in the wake of the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.
Amazon’s Marvelous Ms. Maisel followed Watchmen with 20 nominations in total. In third place for most number of nominations was HBO’s Succession and Netflix’s Ozark.
Speaking of Netflix, the popular streaming giant didn’t do too badly, either. Its lineup of series and movies got 160 nominations all in all, outpacing perennial rival HBO, who had no more Game of Thrones to beef up its nomination list.
It also made history as the platform with the most noms in a single year.
Disney+’s The Mandalorian helped raise the profile of the brand-new streaming contender. The Star Wars TV series walked away with 13 nominations.
Winners will be announced on September 20.
