SUBIC - Actor and sports buff Gerald Anderson took time out from his busy show business career to take part in his first triathlon on Sunday.
The 26-year-old Anderson, a well-known basketball junkie, raced in the 25-29 age group of the 2015 ASTC Asian Triathlon Cup in a homecoming of sorts for the Subic-born celebrity.
Despite only a month's training tucked under his belt, Anderson signed for the standard distance comprised of a 1.5-kilometer swim, 40-km bike and 10-km run under the sweltering summer sun.
“I just started (training) one month ago lang, this is my first triathlon,” Anderson told Spin.ph after the race.
Although Anderson swore he enjoyed the 'fulfilling' experience, the popular actor admitted on hindsight that he wished he had put in more training hours than he had prior to his first standard-distance race.
“Experience lang makatikim ng hirap!” he said grinning. “Hindi (madali) talaga! Alam na alam ko na ngayon. Hindi ko masabi kung saan 'yung mahirap kasi sobrang hirap lahat.”
Finding time for training wasn't easy either, Anderson said, given his tight working schedule.
“Yung training sinisingit ko lang every now and then, siyempre may kasabay na taping then so hindi araw-araw 'yung training ko. Pero masaya ako na sumali ako dito,” he said.
Anderson said he was influenced by fellow cast members in the television series ‘Nathaniel,' notably Isabel Daza and Ivan Carapiet who are both into multi-sports.
The hardships notwithstanding, Anderson said he enjoyed the experience.
“Masaya! It was very fulfilling, Nakakatuwa lahat ng tao. Ang pinaka-memorable sa akin 'yung pag may nakakasalubong ako and chini-cheer nila ako ng, ‘Go bro! Kaya mo iyan!’ and ganoon din ako sa kanila. Ibang klase ang community ng tri."
Will he keep tri-ing?
“Oh yeah! Gusto ko pa! Pero next time mas magte-training pa ako," he swore. "This is a good experience - a first for me and hopefully not the last.”
