OLYMPIC-bound Eumir Marcial, the country’s top amateur fighter, got engaged on Wednesday night to long-time partner Princess Jenniel Cabradilla Galarpe at a simple but romantic set-up at the rooftop of Marcial’s home in Cavite.
Marcial, one of two Filipino boxers so far who have clinched berths to the Tokyo Games, made the proposal in the presence of close friends and special guests, reigning International Boxing Federation (IBF) super-flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas and his trainer-manager Joven Jimenez.
Eumir and Jenniel, a former member of the women’s national team, have been a couple for eight years now.
The 24-year-old Marcial can’t help but look back on the trials both of them had to go through just to be together until now.
“Ang daming trials na dumating sa amin para paghiwalayin kami. Pero nandito (pa rin) kami ngayon, stay strong pa rin,” said Marcial as he thanked his friends, supporters, and most of all their families for staying with them through thick and thin.
Shortly after, the Aiba World Championship silver medal winner brought out the engagement ring and proposed to Jenniel, niece of Olympian and former Asian Games gold medalist Roberto Jalnaiz.
“Hindi ko na aaksayahin ang panahon na ito na nandito kayo ngayon. Kaya Love…,” said Eumir as he took out the engagement ring and offered it to Jenniel, who couldn’t contain shedding tears of joy while holding a bouquet of red flowers in her hands.
On que, a friend of Jerwin appeared from nowhere, holding a large white streamer with the words ‘WILL YOU MARRY ME’ in bold letters while the song Perfect by Ed Sheeran blared in the background.
“Ang importante mahal ko siya,” said Marcial.
“Congratulations. Ang galing,” said Ancajas, who’s been a friend of Marcial since their teenage years. “Parang sinadya na nakapunta kami rito.”
Jimenez added they have no idea about Marcial formally proposing to Jenniel, saying they were only told about the couple celebrating their anniversary.
“Bisita lang kami. Hindi naman namin alam na mag-propose na si Eumir,” said Jimenez, who’s Survival Camp, which serves as Ancajas’ training camp, is also located in Cavite.
“Masaya kami para kay Eumir. Sikat na sikat na siya at ngayon nga lalaban na sa Olympics.”
The Marcial couple and their visitors later partake the sumptuous dinner they prepared for everybody.
Eumir, a member of the Philippine Air Force and native of Zamboanga City, later posted a short message on his Facebook account about their engagement.
“My princess deserves a crown, and she finally said YES,” said the boxer complete with a ring emoji.
“I love you my future wife.”
