JUST how lofty is Dzi Gervacio's vision for beach volleyball in the Philippines?

"The goal is to make the Philippines the heart of beach volleyball in Asia," she said to SPIN Life.

Gervacio is one of the founders of Beach Volleyball Republic, together with her partners, Gretchen Ho, Charo Soriano, Bea Tan, and Fille Cainglet-Cayetano.

Now, on its sixth year, the organization has already conducted 40 legs of tournaments in the country, organized two Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) World Tours, and survived a grueling coronavirus pandemic. It's set to return to action this May.

In our tropical country, Gervacio has often wondered why beach volleyball isn't more popular here.

"The country has world-class beaches. It's really a wonder why outdoor sports get less attention. We had this insight when we started BVR. This is a huge potential we have in beach volleyball," she said.

The former Ateneo Lady Eagle sees a bright future for Filipinas in the sport, especially in the international scene.

"It's one sport that we can own up to. In indoor, height is a huge factor, but beach is a whole different game, you don't need to be as tall. It's more of a cerebral game, strategizing," she continued.

Her passion for the sport is so strong that she's decided to take a break from indoor to focus on beach volleyball.

Gervacio's tireless quest to promote the sport is also featured in the new children's book Fearless Filipinas: 12 Women Who Dared To Be Different.

"It specifically featured my story, my journey starting from indoor and how I just discovered beach after I graduated college. The goal is to create a whole different perspective on the sport and introduce it more to Filipinos," she said.

Fearless Filipinas is already open for pre-orders online, for P799 a copy.

Joining the 'Queen of Jump Serve' in the book are other women on top of their own respective fields: Angel Locsin on film and philanthropy, pilot Jessica Cox, actress and activist Asia Jackson, Elda Rotor of Penguine Classics, Jessie Sincioco of The Manna Cuisine Corporation, and more.
