GOLFERS now have a new and unique way of playing at Club Intramuros -- they can use a Segway to go from hole to hole.
The first of its kind in the Philippines, the one-man personal transport on a golf course adds an original touch that helps set apart one of Manila’s most unique courses and allows people to go around and discover places of interest.
“The Segway is pretty safe. You can get your golf bag and just put it on a Segway and the caddies will just follow,” said Wilson Lei, president of Segway Philippines.
The P700 rental fee of a Segway for one game is the same as that of renting a golf cart.
Lei said the Segway is popular with yuppie types and has helped see an increase in Club golfers.
Segway Philippines managing director George Apacible said, “I’ve been staying here for the longest time and I play golf. Even the golfers didn’t realize that there are a lot of sites and structures inside the course only to find out only that a part of it were also from Jose Rizal’s days.”
A close look at “Extramuros” or the exterior of the famous walls reveals prisons, dungeons, barracks, and even inspect bullet holes and marks left by artillery shrapnel.
The location of the present course is the moat that once surrounded the Walled City.
A total of 12 Segway PT units are ready for golfer’s use, each with a provision to mount a golf bag.
Compared to traditional golf carts that are limited to the trails, Segways can be parked on the rough just before the greens of the 18-hole, par 66 course.
Apacible said thru the Segway, they also has an additional way of giving back to the 300 caddies to make a living as tour guides in the absence of golfers.
“They’re the best people to hire because they have been doing this for more than 20 years or more and they know the lay out of the land. We did research about the sights and we came out with a script,” Apacible said.
CNN International actually paved the way for the Segway tour to be implemented when the news team that covered the Walled City suggested their introduction to the tourism sector.
The Navigator tour also offers 30 minute and one hour tours of Intramuros centered on the centuries old walls and the outside environs with discounts given to students.
