CIGNAL and Sky have submitted a joint offer for the rights to broadcast NBA games in the Philippines, following the termination of Solar Entertainment of its basketball channels BTV and NBA Premium TV.
Cignal confirmed the development in its social media account shortly after BTV and NBA Premium TV cease its operations on early Tuesday morning.
“With the common goal of delivering NBA content to Filipinos, Cignal and Sky are currently in joint negotiations with the NBA. We have submitted an offer to the NBA for the continued carriage of the games and are awaiting a response,” said Cignal in a statement.
A source said the broadcast rights to air the NBA games have become very expensive that a joint bid among two media giants became necessary.
Cignal is a subsidiary of media conglomerate MediaQuest Holdings. Among its subsidiaries include TV5. Sky, meanwhile, is a subsidiary of ABS-CBN Corporation.
Solar Entertainment recently ceased the two basketball dedicated channels BTV and NBA Premium TV after its contract to air the NBA games expired on Monday, September 30. Solar Entertainment aired the NBA in different local and cable channels for 18 years.
