CARLOS Yulo’s journey to two Olympic gold medals was a wild one, to say the least.
But amid the drama of it all, it was his partner of over five years, Chloe San Jose, who stood steadfastly by his beau through glory and controversy.

As Yulo moves past their very public family rift, San Jose finds peace in being a much-needed breath of fresh air for the Philippine Sportswriters Association’s (PSA) newly-minted Athlete of the Year.

“’Yung motivation niya (ngayon) is matapatan or mahigitan ‘yung blessings na binigay ni Lord sa kanya (this year). ‘Yung motivation na ‘yun comes from a very healthy source, kasi before, parang there’s so many things going on,” said San Jose.
“Ang hirap din po noon (coming from a place of) over-eagerness na, ‘I really have to win.’ Now, it’s coming from a really healthy source.”
In his acceptance speech, the first thing Yulo thanked his partner for: her taking care of his mental well-being in trying times during his Olympic run.

“Sa napakaganda kong partner, Chloe, maraming, maraming salamat sa pag-aalaga sa mental health ko.”
Such a healthy bond is one San Jose isn’t ever taking for granted, no matter what other people have said about the controversies that have dogged their relationship.
“I feel so loved and cared for. I’m always thankful and grateful na palagi niyang naa-acknowledge ‘yung nagawa namin together,” San Jose said.

“Obviously, it’s his achievement but I’m just overwhelmed na he’s always thanking me at inaacknowledge ’yung nagiging support ko for him.
“I really am a sentimental person for the smallest things, so maybe that’s why it manifested into bigger things.”
