A CELEBRATED athlete-coach tandem from Cebu made great strides in the second leg of the 2014 Run United RunRio Trilogy Series held in Manila last Sunday.
Kenyan Eliud Kering won with a time of one hour, 59 minutes and 34 seconds, beating out John Philip Duenas of emerged as the fastest Filipino entry with 2:03:38. Another Kenyan, Philip Ronoh (2:04:31) completed the men’s podium finish.
Mary Joy Tabal of Team Unilab reigned supreme in the women’s 32K. The Southwestern University alumnus took first place with a time of 2 hours, 11 minutes and 28 seconds, beating Southeast Asian Games multiple marathon medalist Christabel Martes (2:11:54) and Raterta Luisa who came in at 2:27:38.
Duenas, a triathlete, is Tabal’s coach and the duo have participated in several local and international running events, with both winning the 21K event of the 2012 Singapore Sundown Marathon.
Run United 2, organized by RunRio, drew more than 12,000 runners who took part in the 32K, 21K, 10K and 500m races. Winners in all categories received trophies, medals and cash prizes.
The start and finish lines were located at Kilometer 0 along Roxas Boulevard near the Rizal Monument, with the U-turn at the Manila-Cavitex Expressway.
With the new 32K category, RU2 is considered as a preparation race for the Run United Philippine Marathon set for October.
A portion of the race registration fees went to support Gawad Kalinga communities in Caloocan City.
