Netflix's live-action series adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender has garnered significant attention, with fans eagerly awaiting its release. But something that sparked excitement is the casting of Gordon Cormier, a talented Filipino-Canadian actor, in the lead role.
Filipino-Canadian Gordon Kyle Diez Cormier is going to be mastering all four elements as he plays the character of Aang, in Avatar: the Last Airbender, which is the most anticipated live-action adaptation of the popular Nickelodeon series from the 2000s.
Cormier was cast by Netflix in 2021 to play the role of the titular character.
An earlier live-action adaptation of the popular TV series was made by filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan, whose live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender has been a subject of much criticism. Released in 2010, angered fans of the original show, who claim the film was unfaithful to the original series. Fans also criticized the alleged “whitewashing” by the casting of Katara and Sokka, who were played by white actors when they were portrayed as brown-skinned in the original series.
Avatar: The Last Airbender Cast
Now, it seems Netflix has pleased ATLA fans by casting Asians to play the roles of Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Zuko in the latest live-action adaptation of the hit series. Apart from Gordon Cormier who plays Aang, the rest of the main cast includes Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, and Dallas Liu as Zuko.
