THE historic Blue Eagle Gym is about to get its long due facelift.
Ateneo de Manila is partnering with Firefly LED in the rehabilitation project, with improved lighting set to be installed in the 70-year-old venue.
"We're looking at how to improve the lighting inside the Blue Eagle Gym with Firefly and it's fitting as the Blue Eagle Gym is celebrating 70 years of existence," said Ateneo athletic director Em Fernandez in the two parties' contract signing on Wednesday.
The facility, which was built in 1949 under the direction of then-Ateneo rector Fr. William F. Masterson, S.J., has housed NCAA and UAAP games before, with a number of PBA games also being held in the venue during the pro league's early years.
This season's taekwondo torunament will be held inside the Blue Eagle Gym, although there's a number of Ateneo varsity teams who are using the gym as their practice venue.
Firefly LED's partnership also encompasses supporting the basketball teams of Ateneo this UAAP Season 82.
"This is a new partnership we're starting and it's not just about sponsorship, not just about having a logo on the uniform, but a partnership," said Fernandez.
With the Blue Eagles aiming for a three-peat in the men's basketball tournament, the lighting company hopes that this will just be the start of a fruitful alliance between the two camps.
"Right now, it's a Season 82 engagement, but like what Em shared, the intent is to look at it at a long-term capacity," said Firefly LED marketing director Erik Riola.
