ALEX Compton launched a brand new book hoping to empower parents to navigate youth sports with purpose, values, and growth.
"Wisest Learners: Guiding Your Child's Athletic Journey" is a must-read guide for parents, as it inspires to make a change in their approach to their children's sporting exploits by shifting focus from individual accolades to "building character, fostering intentional parenting, and creating meaningful engagement in youth sports."

“As a parent, I’ve often reflected on how values are not just abstract ideals that exist in a vacuum; they are principles that guide how we lead and parent. By anchoring ourselves in values like humility and passion, we create a framework from which standards and expectations naturally flow. And as our children grow, those values remain constant, even as the specifics of our guidance evolve," Compton said.
Now based in Wisconsin in the U.S., Compton is hoping to share his experiences as a father of three, as he blends in his personal anecdotes while also giving actionable advice.
"Shared experiences bind teams and communities, and the growth within each practice, each game, and every season is invaluable. When parents focus on key concepts — like building character, supporting their child’s effort, and celebrating progress rather than perfection — the athletic journey becomes richer and more meaningful for everyone involved," said the former Alaska coach, who also serves as training director for the National Basketball Training Center.

The book is co-authored by former PBL player Kevin Dalafu, who played for San Mig Coffee in the now-defunct league and is now Head of School at Kings Christian School in California.
It is designed to resonate with parents at every stage of their children's journeys -- from those who see sports as path to scholarships to those who simply want to have their kids be part of a team.
“The focus isn’t on the grade; it’s on how you do things,” said Dalafu. “Our values are what guide us, and if we hold fast to them, the fruit will take care of itself.”
Paperback versions are available on Amazon worldwide and in the Philippines at Fully Booked and Learning Plus. Digital copies are also available.
