TODAY is International Dog Day.

Apparently, it was news for Pasig mayor Vico Sotto. “International Dog Day daw ngayon!” he said in a Facebook post. But the timing couldn’t have been better.

Six dogs from the city’s K9 unit are set to retire from service, and Sotto is encouraging followers to adopt them. Five of them are Belgian Malinois, while one is a mixed breed of Malinois and Retriever.

The oldest of them is Miki, an 11-year-old female.

“[T]hose will adopt should be experienced in handling dogs,” warned the mayor. “If interested, please message Pasig City DRRMO [Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office) for screening.”

As the Agence France Press reported, dogs could help you get through coronavirus-induced anxiety and depression.

"A dog can be a big, big game-changer in terms of an emotional journey. A dog absorbs your entire stress. They understand... what you are going through," Avani Naresh from Gurgaon, New Delhi told the global news agency. Naresh had been visiting dog cafes since the start of the lockdown.

"I think if I had a dog during the lockdown, I think my anxiety levels, my stress levels would have been to the minimum."
