ON A Twitter post announcing the installation of 60 bike racks along public buildings in his city, popular Pasig City mayor Vico Sotto revealed the price tag for the city transport initiative: P15,000 per bike rack.
Each rack can hold six bikes, so that's P2,500 to make one parking slot for a bike.
“To get an idea of how cheap this is, a carpark [building] costs AT LEAST 600K per car space,” said Sotto in his tweet. “With [building] maintenance, a parking space for a car easily costs 300x more than for a bike.”
For reference, according to public bidding documents, a steel parking building to be constructed at the Philippine Children’s Medical Center was budgeted at P70 million. Two three-story parking buildings at the House of Representatives were given a budget of P333 million.
Promoting bike mobility has become one of the city’s main advocacies ever since the enhanced community quarantine was lifted. In June, extensive bike lanes were set up around the city. Now, with the mayor’s new initiative, bike racks to park your rides might become a more common sight around Pasig.
