This dating app will scare the Black Mirror fan in you

We rate and review the movies we watch, restaurants we’ve been to, the things we bought on Shopee and Lazada, so why not rate and review the people we date? Because we all know that Nosedive episode on Black Mirror, that’s why.

But apparently, not everyone was freaked out by Nosedive. In fact, two passionate entrepreneurs thought it would be an exciting idea to really try it out for real. So, ladies and gentlemen, this is Do I Date.

The app boasts that it is the “TripAdvisor for people,” and we’re not sure just how we feel about that. But let us tell you how this app works.

Basically, you register an account just like any dating app out there. You then search for the names of the dates you’ve had before, assuming they’re also a member, and assign to them a star rating and review. Sent you a dick pic? One star. Ghosted you after five days of talking? Two stars. Amazing in bed, but needs work on his hygiene? Three stars. Great conversationalist, but just not your type? Four stars. You don’t necessarily have to follow our ratings, but you know what we mean.

With this try-before-you-buy dating app, you can lessen, if not get rid of, catfishes or people who fake their profiles online. And, no, we don’t mean hito.

Aside from that, the app also promotes transparency, authenticity, and accountability. If you want to project yourself as a douchebag, a lover, a romantic, a playboy, everyone will still know what you're really like because of the reviews.

But we do find this concept a little horrifying. Don’t get us wrong, it has a lot of good things going for it, and it really does help if you don’t want to waste your time on bad date candidates. But suppose you were just having a bit of bad luck that day, and your date decides to give you a low rating—will you ever find a date again? How do you even redeem yourself from that? You’d go crazy! It’ll turn you into Bryce Dallas Howard from Nosedive! We all know how that went.
