TO limit the transmission of COVID-19, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) ordered all major tollways to go full cashless.

Today, San Miguel Corporation has announced that they are ready to comply.

On November 2, motorists will need to have RFID stickers when they traverse the Skyway system, the NAIA Expressway, South Luzon Expressway, STAR tollway, and the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX).

“We have completed the reconfiguration of these cashless lanes to help ensure a smooth transition and hopefully, minimal delays for motorists,” said San Miguel Corporation president Ramon S. Ang in a press statement. “Implementing this measure is a priority for us because it is in line with government health regulations and it will better protect both our motorists and expressway employees.”

Currently, SMC is in the process of upgrading the toll stations along these roadways.

This change means you’ll have to install an RFID sticker on your car, if you haven’t yet. On that point, Ang said: “I would like to remind the public: For your added convenience and safety, please avail now of your RFID stickers at our toll plazas. There are no requirements, so it will be very quick and easy.”

SMC has introduced a scheme called “RFID To Go” where the sticker can be installed at the toll lanes. You’ll need to pay a minimum P200 load for Class 1 vehicles, and an amount equivalent to the farthest toll for Class 2 and 3 vehicles.

With a fully automated system in place, there will be no need for toll collectors along these highways. In his statement, Ang said that “[o]ur employees will not be displaced. Instead, we will find postings for them that are suited to their skills and competency.”

Ang also said, “We support government policy to go cashless. We also believe it will stem the spread of the virus even as we keep transportation and mobility open and efficient.”
