THE Nike+ Fuel Band SE is Nike’s latest addition to the activity tracker market.
When worn on the wrist, the device tracks not only how much, but also how often and how intensely its user moves. It provides a real-time feedback, move reminders and insights to help its owner move more and move better.
Stefan Olander, vice president Nike Digital Sport, said the entire insight behind the Nike+ Fuelband SE is motivation, “People want to be motivated. We want to make it really easy to stay motivated and stay more active.”
Even for non-techies, the band is easy to use since it only has one button. The NikeFuel numbers are shown via an LED display. The color display moves from red through yellow and when you hit your goal, you hit green. It also displays your calorie burn, how many steps you have taken throughout the day and time.
“The premise itself is very simple - you wear the band on your wrist, you set yourself a daily goal and the band helps you keep it," said Olander.
To gauge performance, Nike came up with NikeFuel, a single, universal way to measure all kinds of activities - from morning workouts to walking home from the office. Designed to measure whole-body movement regardless of the user’s age, weight or gender, NikeFuel tracks the active life.
Some of the band's key features are:
- Daily Goal which tracks the intensity of workouts and displays progress for the entire day as users move from red to green.
- Win the Hour which helps users get more out of their activity when it’s spread throughout the day. The band sends out more reminders that gives users an extra push to get them moving every hour.
- Nike+ Session keeps track of the intensity of workouts through NikeFuel Rate and shows total NikeFuel earned during the session. Users can then understand which activities earn them the most fuel.
- Online, the Nike+ FuelBand opens up more ways to connect with friends and activity partners who can help keep each other going. Users can create or join a group and go after a goal together. They can share their progress, cheer each other on and compete for top slot on the leaderboard.
A motion sensor can track everyday movement which helps people know when they are most active and what it will take for them to do more.
Bluetooth 4.0 makes sure there is a constant connection, syncing the data from the band with a Nike+ account and giving feedback and motivation as the user needs it.
A USB connection is built into the band that is used to charge the device to any computer. One single charge from its curved battery can last up to four days.
“From the band on your wrist, to your phone, to the web is this chain of inspiration unlike anything we’ve ever seen before," Olander said.
Priced at US$149, the Nike+ Fuel Band SE is available in Nike’s online stores and comes in Volt, Pink Foil, Total Crimson and Black colorways.
