Djardel “DJ” Mampusti has come a long way from just playing DoTA with classmates in high school. Today, he’s one of the highest-ranking professional gamers in the sport. But his journey to the top wasn’t easy.
DJ’s first foray into e-sports gaming started with Pagibig. While he saw little action during his stint with the team (as junior members generally do), he gained enough experience and confidence to form a team with fellow gamers Ryo and Soniq and found moderate success.
In 2013, he found greater success as a member of a South Korean team called Rave. Culture shock and the lack of sponsorship initially made things more challenging for DJ, but these things didn’t stop him from helping the team post several impressive tournament finishes.
After emerging as champions of the Korea DoTA League Season 4, Rave received an invite to participate in the DoTA 2 Asia Championship 2015. The perennial underdogs managed to beat their more experienced counterparts Invictus Gaming, MVP Phoenix, and Newbee to finish 5-6th. The cash prize allowed DJ to invest in his own computer shop.
In 2016, DJ joined the Malaysian team Fanatic, which placed 5-6th at the Manila Major 2016, thanks in large part to his stellar play. He followed it with a fourth-place finish at The International 2016—the best performance by a Southeast Asian team since TI3—before leaving for another Filipino team, Execration, where he won the MPGL Southeast Asian Championship.
DJ climbed the ranks by daring to be himself and ignoring those who insist that there’s no career in gaming. Instead of letting others influence his career choices, the highest-earning Filipino gamer pursued his passion and challenged the norm.
