NO DOUBT about it — there’s big bucks in streaming. With 43 million gamers spending $572 million (or P27 billion) on digital games last year, the gaming industry is huge in the Philippines, and streaming video games can seem like a valid way to make a good living off it.

But did you know that even with this amount of money bouncing around, only 2 percent of streamers actually have a contract with a big streaming platform and earn a steady income?

Those are statistics offered by the Pinoy social app Calamansi (Google Play, Apple Store), which is also offering a complement to a streaming career: being a ‘Game Idol’ — a key feature of its service, and the way it stands apart from other social platforms.

Calamansi Game Idols are people who have a deep passion for a certain game, who are willing to use their free time to accompany other players in playing games, coaching, and other services. For now, Game Idols are offered for Mobile Legends and Call of Duty Mobile gamers, though Calamansi is working on bringing in idols for other popular games and esports titles.

For accompanying or teaching gamers, Game Idols earn a reasonable commission.

And for gamers who often have to suffer for teaming up with randoms in their favorite online games, well, “You’ll never have to game alone again,” promised the brand.

Game Idols are a key feature of the Pinoy social app. Gamers on Calamansi who are looking for people to game with can schedule a booking with a Game Idol. The app will then launch a private chat room on the scheduled time. After the session ends, Idols can collect their fares.

So who can be an Idol? Says the brand: “Anyone who is passionate about gaming, whether you are a student, young professional, entrepreneur, or unemployed. You can be a cute gamer girl or a funny dude, have a sweet voice; you can be a game master, a professional player, or a coach... As long as you love gaming, you can become a Game Idol!”

Those interested in applying to be Game Idols can sign up here. Applicants will go through a screening process, as well as a training camp.
