WHEN he played for the Manila Metrostars in the defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA), one of Alex Compton’s first investments was a second-hand Nissan Terrano.
Now the head coach of the Alaska Aces, Compton still has fond memories of his first-ever car.
“I got a contract with the Metrostars where I can afford to buy a car. It’s my second year. Sa amin (in the United States), it’s called Pathfinder. Here, it’s Nissan Terrano,” said Compton.
Compton said it was a thrill to experience of having an own car which he bought with his earnings with the Metrostars. He had the car for five years.
“I got that in 2000. It was so cool to have your own car. It was so cool. It was second hand, and I bought it for P600,000. It was a blue Terrano. I just loved the 4x4, I took it once in Baguio off-roading. Parang rugged,” said Compton.
Compton said he got to learn driving manual transmission using the Nissan Terrano.
“It was stick shift. If I can learn how to drive a stick shift in Manila, I can drive everywhere. I learned to drive stick shift so medyo kawawa ‘yung clutch niya,” said Compton.
When asked what he loves about the Terrano, Compton said it is the 4x4’s ability to take it off-road and the space it allows to bring family and friends.
“The fact that I can take it off road, I’m ashamed to admit this but sometimes, I drove over curves or took it off-roading, out of town, I can fit some friends in it. It’s not a small car. If there is four, five of us, we can all fit,” said Compton.
“I always loved 4x4s. Having one that is my own and actually for me, learning to drive stick shift on that car, that was pretty cool,” said Compton.
