EXPECT a clean-shaven Alex Compton the next time Alaska sees action in the PBA Philippine Cup.
The Alaska coach said he’s set to shave his full-grown beard on Wednesday night following the Aces’ breakthrough 94-72 win over Columbian Dyip at the Mall of Asia Arena.
It’s not that Compton is a superstitious man. It just so happened that his wife doesn’t like the rugged look he sports nowadays.
“It will last just a few more hours and my wife will shave it off. Ayaw niya, e,” said Compton.
It’s no secret that Compton is going through a difficult phase in his personal life that he had to go back and forth to the US during the off-season to attend to a family matter.
It was during that close to a two-month period that the Alaska coach decided to grow his beard.
“When I went to Wisconsin and somewhere cold, and I’m on vacation, then it’s okay to grow a beard,” he explained. “So I have to go home to do something really important.”
After spending the holiday season in the US, Compton briefly came back to the country in time for the league’s first ever Media Day and then returned to Wisconsin.
He didn’t arrive in the country again until the eve of the Aces’ game against Rain or Shine last Sunday.
“So I haven’t had the chance to shave yet when I got back here,” said Compton, who gets a ribbing for looking like Tom Hanks in the critically-acclaimed movie Cast Away.
But now, he has to.
“I’ve got to have to. Ayaw ni misis, wala naman akong magagawa,” said a grinning Compton. “I’m shaving. I just love my wife.”
A new-look Compton could be his advance Valentine’s gift to his wife as Alaska’s next game would not be until Feb. 13 against Blackwater also at the Mall of Asia Arena.
