Pinoy Nike Kyrie 5 fan-made collabs that'll please Ginebra diehards

TRUST the Philippines to take the Nike Kyrie 5 "Spongebob Squarepants" craze to another level.

Judging by its sold-out status, Kyrie Irving's latest sneaker collection was a hit among sneakerheads and fans of the Nickelodeon animated series. This includes Filipinos, who thought it was a good idea to play with the Kyrie 5 and come up with their own local-flavored collaborations.

Gabriel Almirañez, who initially did a simpler Angel's Burger version of the Kyrie 5, shared in a Facebook interview with SPIN Life that the concept of the "Ginebra" Kyries stemmed from the countless drinking sessions he's had with his clique and the distilled alcoholic drink.

He said, "Napagtripan ko lang i-adjust 'yung Kyrie x Spongebob, kasi almost the same colors siya sa logo ng Angel's. 'Yung Ginebra naman, mahal na mahal lang talaga namin yung gin na yun, ha ha!"

Almirañez also explained what made this particular Irving model the perfect canvas for loud and weird designs like the ones by Pinoys: "The Kyries have just the right number of hues and spacing in between. The collab art was also trending, so I thought, 'Why not make my own?"

His work has already been shared 30,000 times and liked 7,000 times as of writing. The visual artist, who currently works for a clothing brand, has been receiving requests from his friends to make a "Red Horse" and "STI"-themed Kyrie 5.

But if he were to choose another basketball pair to work on, Almirañez revealed that he would love to do a custom Nike Zoom Freak 1 or "pretty much any Jordan sneaker."
