LIKE every other physical activity, hiking can be enjoyed best when done properly.
While the basic preparation includes the bare minimum self-care such as getting enough sleep, stretching the body, and being mentally ready, it’s a big boost to wear the proper hike gear.
Given that the climb is tedious in itself, it’s important to give the lower body the comfort it needs to be able to perform at its best.
Hiking shoes a good investment
“Regardless of the trail, if you are hiking along limestones, blazing the freezing cold temperatures, or crossing rivers, your shoes will either make or break your adventure. So, one of the most important outdoor gear that you should invest on is a good pair of hiking shoes,” professional mountaineer Coby Sarreal of Trail Adventours explained to SPIN.ph.
Sarreal started hiking when he was only eight years old, having grown up in a family of hikers. Now 35, he has hiked all over the country, and has even got as far as the base camp of Mt. Everest back in 2018.
And for him, a good pair of hiking shoes is a game-changer.
Testing out the new adidas TERREX Free Hiker 2.0 Low Gore-Tex for a climb in Mt. Batolusong in Rizal, Sarreal approved of the pair’s quality.
“A new pair of shoes needs to be break in before venturing to the great outdoors. You may use it first for casual walks or daily workouts. This will give both your feet and your new soles enough time to adjust and “harmonize” with each other," he said.
"However, after the Mt. Batolusong hike, I was surprise how the Adidas Terrex 2 performed considering I just got it the day before the trip. It fitted very well - I was comfortable during the whole hike, the traction was commendable and the best part? It really looked amazing,” he added.
Adidas Terrex 2 is breathable
Apart from the grip and the look, he also commended its breathability despite having a waterproof material. Sarreal, though, noticed that the shoe was heavier than an average hike shoe.
“When hiking in the Philippines, I prefer non-water proof shoes. One reason is that it can get really hot in the feet, you’ll sweat and it’ll be miserable. For the Adidas Terrex 2 however, I was surprised that [even if] it was water proof, it didn’t feel hot all throughout our hike,” he explained.
While hiking has grown trendier than ever post-pandemic, Sarreal said it’s a fulfilling hobby anyone can do at their own pace.
He added: “Start small and start short, and let the mountains show you its beauty and wonder."
