THE Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) has found a new partner in Mighty Sports Apparel and Accessories, which will now be the official merchandiser and outfitter of the national basketball team.
The collaboration was formally sealed at the Meralco Bldg. in Ortigas on Wednesday, a day before the Mighty Sports-backed team to the annual Jones Cup left for Chinese Taipei.
Under the agreement, Mighty Sports will produce and sell merchandise promoting the Gilas Pilipinas brand.
Mighty Sports came to the picture after sitting down with the SBP to explore the venture.
“We felt the Gilas brand needs to be exposed more not just in the country but with Filipino overseas as well,” said Mighty Sports president Dr. John Sy.
“The SBP was hoping some private organizations can help them. And we offered them our help through the merchandising since we’re trying to build the business. So in a way, we’re helping the SBP and helping the country. So it’s a two-way partnership.”
Also in attendance during the affair were SBP president Al Panlilio, Mighty Sports owner Caesar Wongchuking, team manager Angelo Wongchuking, SBP executive director Sonny Barrios, SBP special assistant to the president Ryan Gregorio, Gilas team manager Gabby Cui, and Jane Basas, president and CEO of Cignal TV, which will air the Jones Cup live from Taipei.
SBP chairman Emeritus Manny V. Pangilinan likewise graced the event and was presented with his own Mighty Sports shirt emblazoned with jersey No. 1.
Panlilio said the SBP hopes the apparel will be made available to the public just before the FIBA World Cup on August 31.
“Actually ang target talaga namin is the World Cup. So we’re really working double time with the designs and production,” the SBP president said.
The merchandise comes in the form of hoods, shirts, socks, caps, and anything Mighty Sports ‘can think of in promoting the Gilas brand.’
Sy also assured the merchandise will be affordable to the public.
“We’ll make sure it’s going to be affordable siya sa mga tao at siyempre proud silang isuot yung Gilas brand,” he said, adding it will be made available in malls, department stores, and likewise through online shopping.
