NIKE is planning to release a new version of Kobe Bryant’s signature shoe as a tribute to the basketball superstar when he topples Michael Jordan as the NBA’s third leading scorer of all time.
Nike Basketball made a teaser announcement on its official Twitter account via a photo featuring a black silhouette of a low-top basketball shoe with the lines “Coming with 32,293” - a reference to the number of points the 36-year old Bryant needs to overtake Jordan on the career scoring list.
The tweet read: “77 points to go. Stay Tuned." It was followed by the hashtatg #MambaMoment, a reference to Bryant's nickname 'Black Mamba' which Nike has incorporated in its marketing strategy.
It is believed the commemorative pairs, a special edition of the current Kobe 9 model, will be released after Bryant passes Jordan’s record.
The 18-year NBA veteran recently scored 14 points in a losing effort last Sunday (Monday, Manila time) against the New Orleans Pelicans. The Lakers star, who is currently leading the NBA with a 25.2 ppg clip, only needs 63 points to overtake Jordan's record.
