ATHLETES have different reasons for choosing the numbers on their jerseys-some pick special dates, others pattern it after their idols.
For Ateneo setter Deanna Wong, it goes way back to her elementary years.
Wong's #3 is the link to several coincidental, but personally memorable things, during her younger years.
“I had two best friends, tapos may isang crush ako,” she recalls. “And di ba kapag grade school may class numbers yan.”
“Kasi two of my best friends [class number] three and 13, yung crush ko 23 and ako 33,” she adds. “So yun, that’s the main reason lang.”
Despite the rather simplistic reason behind her choice, Wong owned and grew to love her jersey number as time went on.
It was in Season 79, however, when she had to switch her jersey to No. 11 because her senior, Mich Morente, already had the No. 3.
She got her number back the following season, Season 80, where she was named Best Setter for the Lady Eagles.
“I got to love it na,” she said. “Wala lang, I don’t know why, I just love three.”
“It’s been years na rin, wala na yun, feeling ko hindi [alam ni crush] and matagal na rin kasi yun,” she added. “Pero ngayon pwede naman jersey no. 4, gusto ko na rin ang no. 4.”
