ADIDAS has unveiled another entry into the Sneaker Wars with the first signature shoe of Portland Trailblazers star Damian Lillard.
The D Lillard 1 was officially announced today in Portland, which is also the North American headquarters of the German shoe and apparel brand.
The third-year point guard has gained a reputation for making clutch shots, is currently tallying 22 points, almost 5 rebounds and more than 6 assists per game, used to be the lead athlete endorsing the Crazylight Boost before receiving his own shoe.
Personal touches to the shoe include specially crafted rap lyrics in the insole. The heel of the right shoe features a prominent adidas logo while the heel of the left shoe displays the brand new Lillard winged logo that combines the letters D, L and O. The D represents Damian’s first name. L represents his last name and family. 0 is Damian’s number on the court, which he chose to symbolize the letter “O” for the three places he’s called home: Oakland, California; Ogden, Utah; and Oregon. A wing made of three stripes represents his crew of close friends, the “Fly Guyz.”
One notable aspect is the absence of the brand’s trademark ‘3 stripes’, hence the prominent heel logos on the back. “DAME” - Lillard’s nickname- is printed on the right tongue. Snakeskin on the toe cap overlay specified by the 24-year old NBA star.
On the technical side, the former Rookie of the Year prefers a low-cut silhouette to complement his quickness-based game. A full length adiprene+ provides smooth heel to toe transition during aggressive cuts and Adidas Spring Frame coupled with forefoot lacing helps in stability. An inner booty gives comfort and fit. For the outsole, adidas developed a new herringbone pattern to aid in on court traction.
There are an initial four colorways. For the Rip City colorway, the fashion-conscious Lillard chose premium black nubuck leather for the upper while the Weber State colorway comes in purple suede.
The D Lillard 1 is scheduled for a Feb.6 and will retail for US$105.
