HAVING endured an ACL injury and missed a few games for UST last UAAP season, Growling Tiger CJ Cansino has found another way to make his presence felt on the court, this time through bodybuilding.
"Goal ko talaga magpa-bulk ng katawan, kasi last season, madalas akong nababangga, and tuwing nababangga ako, nadi-dispatch agad ako," he shared in an interview with SPIN Life. "Kaya ang goal ko talaga ever since is 'yung magpalaki para mas mabigat ako, lalo na para sa depensa namin."
Prior to the season, CJ worked with strength and conditioning coach Luis de Mesa on a bodybuilding routine, apart from his rehabilitation and recovery.
He said, "Sinusunod ko lang 'yung workout plan ni Coach Luis, kasi sa kanya din ako nag-therapy nung injury ko. Nagte-training kami five times a week, and after that, may core workouts ako para mas lumakas 'yung balance ko sa court."
Aside from working out, he also consults a nutritionist to ensure that his body is on the right diet. CJ revealed, "May nutritionist ako, si Tim Nutrition. I make sure na sinusunod ko mga sinasabi niya for my daily diet — kailangan gulay, prutas, tamang amount ng food intake each day, and, of course, 'yung supplements like mass-gainer."
The UST captain admitted that while this tougher build has empowered him to be more aggressive, he has also been a bit more cautious to prevent further injury.
"Mas na-boost nito 'yung confidence ko, kasi mas ramdam ko na 'yung balance ko, and mas malakas yung katawan ko ngayon. At the same time, kailangan talagang mag-ingat na, kasi mahirap na baka mamaya maulit," he explained.
CJ only had two points for UST when they succumbed to the Ateneo Blue Eagles, 66-52, over the weekend, but the King Tiger assured that he and his team will bounce back in their next match.
According to him, "We played well, pero bumitaw kami sa dulo. Lumabas 'yung pagiging bata namin sa game. But that's not an excuse, kailangan naming mag-grow pa para sa mga susunod pang games."
