MONTALBAN, Rizal – Beau Belga wore goggles for the first time in a PBA game during Rain or Shine’s Philippine Cup game against Magnolia on Sunday.
It was borne out of necessity as Belga has been dealing with astigmatism, which has caused dizziness over the last few days in practice.

“Iwas hilo,” said the 38-year-old Belga. “Kasi ‘yung mga previous practices namin, nakakaramdam ako ng hilo… which is sabi, sa mata, kapag napapagod ‘yung mata ko dahil nga may grado, ‘yun ‘yung nagka-cause ng hilo.”
“Ang advice, wala namang mawawala kung magta-try ka mag-salamin. Actually, last week pa ‘to. Sinusubukan ko sa practice. Hindi naman nagkakaroon ng hilo. Good thing na may improvement, kulang na lang sa kondisyon,” said Belga, who missed the first few games of the Elasto Painters’ campaign due to vertigo.
Online resources state that astigmatism can lead to vertigo.
In his first game wearing goggles, Belga performed respectably, finishing with seven points and one rebound in five minutes and five seconds of play, shooting 2-of-3 from threes.
Belga was also seen wearing glasses even when on the bench barking out instructions to his teammates from the sidelines.
“Maliit lang siya (grado). Kaya lang, pag tinatanggal mo siya, ‘yung kanang mata ko, kapag tumatagal, parang naghahanap siya ng linaw kaya doon siya nagka-cause ng hilo. Parang iikot na ‘yung paningin mo,” said Belga.
The Rain or Shine veteran recalled the first time he experienced his latest health issue.
“Masama sa pakiramdam sobra. Nung naranasan ko nung una, talagang sa court, umiikot ‘yung court eh. Nakaupo na ako nun, para akong matutumba. ‘Yun ‘yung talagang mahirap doon,” said Belga.
“Depende siguro kasi sabi nila, mababa pa naman, less than 100 tapos 25 na astigmatism. ‘Yung astigmatism ang mabigat kasi naghahanap ‘yung mata ng kapag nahihirapan siya sa liwanag, sumesegue siya, para kang naduduling. Doon ka nagka-cause ng hilo.
“Mahirap. Kung mamaya, ma-experience ko while driving, ‘yun ‘yung iniiwasan ko,” said Belga.
