AT 50 but want to look and feel 25?
Let Alex Colet, the team captain of the Philippine underwater hockey team tell you how.
For someone who’s already 54, the entrepreneur/athlete bagged the bronze medal in the recently concluded 30th Southeast Asian Games.
Here are some of his tips on how to look young:
Dream it, achieve it
"Kahit na ganitong age na ako I can still move like a a 25 or 30-year old. It’s because ‘yun ang dapat mong ilagay sa isip mo na I don’t want to be a typical 50-year old na aakyat lang sa hagdan hirap na hirap na. Magagawa ‘yun just by exercise, balanced diet, you don’t abuse your body and ‘yun ang goal mo."
Discipline is the key
"You have to be disciplined when it comes to your diet. Ang hirap nga mag-diyeta eh. Kasi gutum na gutom ka, stressed na stressed ka. Anong gagawin mo kapag stressed na stressed ka? Eksakto, kakain ka. Kasi ang hirap mag-diyeta at mag-train."
Everything must be balanced
"It starts with the mind. The value that health is number one, health is important. Ang dami kasi [na] at my age, they’re corporate executives, they get into vices like drinking, overeating. They’re so focused on their work nakakalimutan nila ‘yung katawan nila. Okay, they can be successful in their job. But my god, they have diabetes, they have high blood. You always have to believe that the best kind of life is a balanced life, meaning you’re successful in your job and you’re also healthy."
Food is the source of nutrition, not pleasure
You have to give up the [thinking] that food is a source of pleasure. Hangga’t ang food ay source of pleasure, mago-overeat ka talaga. Kasi unang-una kapag pleasure ‘yan, kahit busog ka na pero kain ka pa rin nang kain. Ang food kasi, it’s just a source of nutrition. Maghahanap ka ng alternative mo ng source of pleasure: exercise, makinig ka ng music."
Out of sight, out of mind
"Sa house, imbis na may sweets, dapat may apple ka dyan, o orange, o [basta] fruit. Para anytime na may urge kang kumain, imbis na McDonald’s burger and french fries mag-apple ka na lang. ‘Yun ang technique para ma-stop mo ‘yung kakain ka ng marami. May iba’t ibang technique ‘yan, like sa cake hindi mo kayang wala? Eh ‘di kalahating slice lang. At saka naniniwala ako na out of sight, out of mind. Kunwari sa bahay mo, tanggalin mo lahat ng bad food, sitsirya, softdrinks, ice cream, bawal ‘yan sa bahay. Kasi kapag nasa house ka nanonood ka ng TV or bored ka pag bukas mo sa ref makikita mo ‘yung ice cream, ‘yun na ang kakainin mo. Pero kapag walang ganoon sa bahay mo, apple ang andyan, eh alangan naman lumabas ka pa pupunta ka pang grocery kaya sa apple ka na lang."
Meditation helps. A lot
"I think meditating everyday will make you more successful. Ten to 15 minutes a day para lang hindi ka masyadong tataas ang cravings mo. Isa pa, every day is a new day. Hindi porke nag-overeat ako kahapon, wala nang [pag-asa]. If you fail today, when you wake up the following day, start again. Hindi ka dapat nade-demoralize. ‘Wag kang mag-give up."
Find time to exercise
"Before going to work, ‘yung kaibigan kong architect, aalis siya ng bahay ng maaga, dadating siya sa gym ng 6:30 in the morning. Magwo-work out na siya tapos papasok na siya. ‘Yung iba immediately after [work] saka magwo-work out. ‘Yung ibang may sariling oras kagaya ng mga entrepreneurs, isisingit during work hours. Kagaya ko nagsu-swimmig ako during lunch break, then babalik ako sa work ng 1 to 2 p.m."
